What Can You Do?

As an avid subscriber to the Internet Mastery Global Newsletter you undoubtedly know that Amazon has significantly raised their Inbound Placement Fees when sending items to Amazon for fulfillment (FBA).

If you are new to the world of selling on Amazon - perhaps you haven’t started OR you are just beginning the journey of having your own eCommerce Amazon Business - you might not be aware of how impactful these fees really are to the profitability of your business. In reality, you don’t know what you don’t know.

As of March 1, 2024, Amazon’s new Inbound Placement fees have made FBA shipping more expensive for most sellers. These fees, previously known as Inventory Placement, are frustrating sellers throughout the US market.

Some sellers have reported that the fees are high, and they don’t make sense. Others have said that shipment costs have skyrocketed from $8-$14 per box to $90 to $140, and that they have had to pay up or deal with split shipments.

If you’re unfamiliar with what’s happening, The FBA Inbound Placement service fee is the cost of spreading inventory across Amazon’s fulfillment centers close to customers. The fee was introduced on March 1, 2024. To provide fast order shipping to customers, Amazon spreads your inventory across multiple fulfillment centers.

Can I do anything about it?

The first thing you need to do is update your Inbound Settings within your Amazon Sellers account.

In the Fulfilled by Amazon settings you need to chose your preferred inbound setting.

Steps to Updating Inbound Settings

The first step is to update your shipping preferences on Amazon Seller Central. You can do that here: https://sellercentral.amazon.com

Finally, select the “Amazon optimized shipment splits” option and click Update for the changes to take effect.

NOTE: This step is required to see the benefit and savings when creating inbound shipping plans and should be the first step that you take. This step is critical..

Inbound Placement Fee Options Explained.

• Amazon-Optimized Shipment Splits: With this option, FBA sellers are sending shipments to as many as 4+ Amazon warehouses. You should expect minimal Inbound Placement fees and if you’re lucky, no additional fees.

• Partial shipment splits. FBA sellers can send inventory to fewer locations, but Inbound Placement Fees will be subject to a surcharge per unit.

• Minimal shipment splits. If you choose this option, you will have to bear the full Inbound Placement Fees for each unit in your shipment.

Obviously choosing the Amazon-optimized shipment split is the best option for avoiding these fees. But it means you’ll take on the extra costs of the inbound distribution to the 4+ FBA warehouses.

You must do the math and work out if your own inbound shipping costs ‘save’ you enough money.

Increase Your Product Prices

For some Amazon sellers, the new Inbound Placement Fees will mean they will have to increase product prices to absorb the fees.

Ultimately, the reason that Amazon wants to move products to other warehouses (Fulfillment Center Transfer) is to locate products closer to customers who are expecting even quicker delivery.
